Notes

  • New Jersey has NO standard deduction and does NOT honour the federal itemized deductions — mortgage interest, charitable gifts, and state/local income tax are not deductible.
  • New Jersey instead grants flat personal exemptions ($1,000 per taxpayer, +$1,000 for a spouse on a joint return, $1,500 per dependent).
  • The only federal-itemized-style write-off is the property-tax deduction, capped at $15,000 ($7,500 for married filing separately).
  • Two rate schedules only: Table A (Single / MFS) and Table B (MFJ / Head of household / Qualifying widow(er)); rates run 1.4%–10.75% and are NOT inflation-indexed.
  • A filer whose New Jersey gross income is at or below $10,000 (Single / MFS) or $20,000 (MFJ / HoH) owes no New Jersey tax.
  • New Jersey DOES exclude regular 401(k) employee contributions from income (up to the federal limit), just like the federal return — it is 403(b), 457, and IRA contributions that New Jersey instead taxes when made.
