Notes

  • California does NOT allow deducting federal income taxes paid — there is no federal-tax deduction on the California return.
  • Progressive brackets from 1% to 12.3%, plus a 1% Mental Health Services Tax on taxable income over $1,000,000 (top marginal rate 13.3%).
  • California sets its own standard deduction ($5,706 single / $11,412 joint for 2025), far lower than the federal amount.
  • California does NOT conform to the federal HSA deduction, so HSA contributions are added back to California AGI.
  • California did NOT adopt the federal $10,000 SALT cap and does not allow deducting state income tax when itemizing.
  • California has NO preferential capital-gains rate: net long-term capital gains and qualified dividends are taxed as ordinary income. Because the federal engine reports those outside its AGI figure, they are added back to the California AGI base (short-term gains are already inside federal AGI).
