Notes

  • Alabama lets INDIVIDUALS deduct their full federal income tax liability, and unlike the corporate version this individual federal-tax deduction is UNCAPPED (no dollar limit). Per the Federal Income Tax Deduction Worksheet it equals federal tax (Form 1040 line 22 + Net Investment Income Tax) minus refundable credits (EIC, additional child tax credit, American Opportunity credit, Form 2439); here that is federal income tax after credits.
  • Progressive brackets of 2% / 4% / 5% (Ala. Code §40-18-5). For single, married-filing-separately, and head of family: 2% on the first $500, 4% on the next $2,500, 5% over $3,000. Married-filing-jointly brackets are exactly double ($1,000 / $6,000 breakpoints).
  • Alabama's standard deduction is income-tested: it phases down from a per-status maximum (e.g. $8,500 MFJ / $3,000 single) to a floor (e.g. $5,000 MFJ / $2,500 single) as Alabama AGI rises.
  • Personal exemption is $1,500 (single / MFS) or $3,000 (MFJ / head of family); the dependent exemption is income-tested at $1,000 (AGI ≤ $50,000), $500 ($50,001–$100,000), or $300 (over $100,000) per dependent.
  • Alabama conforms to the federal HSA and pre-tax retirement adjustments, so (unlike California) there is no HSA add-back; it also does not allow deducting state income tax and applies no SALT cap to itemized deductions.
