Notes

  • North Carolina levies a single flat rate of 4.25% (2025) on NC taxable income — no brackets, same rate for every filing status and income level.
  • The flat rate is scheduled to keep falling under S.L. 2023-134: 4.75% (2023) → 4.50% (2024) → 4.25% (2025) → 3.99% (2026), with further revenue-triggered cuts possible from 2027.
  • NC standard deduction varies by filing status: $12,750 single/MFS, $25,500 MFJ (and qualifying surviving spouse), $19,125 head of household.
  • NC itemized deductions are a limited subset of the federal ones: qualified mortgage interest + real-estate property taxes are COMBINED and capped at $20,000, plus charitable contributions and certain other items (medical/dental, claim-of-right) — state/local INCOME tax is NOT deductible.
  • North Carolina starts from FEDERAL AGI and conforms to the federal pre-tax 401(k) and HSA treatment, so its taxable income begins at federal AGI with no add-backs.
  • Not modelled: the NC Child Deduction and other state credits/adjustments, because the shared input lacks the fields they require; MFS standard deduction is $0 if the spouse itemizes (a coupling this single-return model does not track).
