Notes

  • Michigan levies a single flat STATE rate of 4.25% (2025) on Michigan taxable income — no brackets, same rate for every filing status and income level. The rate briefly fell to 4.05% for 2023 under a one-time rollback trigger, reverted to 4.25% for 2024, and the Treasury confirmed it stays 4.25% for 2025.
  • The tax base is FEDERAL AGI; Michigan has no standard or itemized deduction — it subtracts a flat personal exemption allowance instead.
  • Personal exemption: $5,800 (2025) for the taxpayer plus $5,800 for a spouse on a joint return ($11,600 married filing jointly; $5,800 otherwise).
  • Dependent exemption: a flat $5,800 per dependent (2025).
  • City income tax is separate: ~24 Michigan cities tax residents at 1% up to 2.4% (Detroit); non-residents pay half. There is no city field in the shared input, so the resident city rate is an OPTIONAL parameter; when supplied it is returned as localTax, computed on the city's own base (federal AGI less the uniform $600-per-exemption city allowance, NOT the state's $5,800), otherwise localTax is omitted.
  • Not modelled (no data in the shared input): Michigan additions/subtractions (e.g. retirement/pension subtraction, the phased 'Retirement Tax' rollback), the $3,400 disabled-veteran and $5,800 stillbirth special exemptions, and city-specific resident-vs-nonresident apportionment.
